Sleep Resources for child sleep issues
There are two issues children will experience when they are having trouble sleeping:
Initiation of sleep (difficulty falling asleep)
Maintenance of sleep (waking up frequently from sleep)
1. Sleep Initiation Issues:
Establishing good sleep habits (also known as sleep hygiene) is essential 7 days a week. This applies to all children (& adults!). It is important to find activities for your children that are relaxing and NOT stimulating for 1-2h before sleep is wanted.
Difficulty getting to sleep could also be one of the first signs that your child is worried or has anxiety about something. Talk to them about whether their mind is racing when they can’t sleep. Perhaps encourage some mindfulness exercises, whether this is colouring in, gentle yoga exercises or reading a mindfulness book or a meditation. Talk to your GP, paediatrician or psychologist/counsellor about other ways to address anxiety in children.

2. Sleep Maintenance Issues:
Sleep maintenance could be due to anxiety, inability to self-settle, obstructive sleep apnoea (if snoring is an issue) and other disordered breathing issues or parasomnias such as nightmares, night terrors, sleep walking.
